Today I had an opportunity to watch a recording of the ever so famous boxing fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. This is the fight where the legendary Filipino boxer hit the decks heavily knocked out. Once I picked my jaw up and wiped my tears off, I started thinking. Why did it happen? Why a simple punch can render us unconscious?

There are two main causes of a knock out.

Our brains are held within a skull bathed in a liquid within the skull. This means there is nothing to stop brain from moving inside the skull. As you can see taking a big punch can cause brain to hit the inside of the skull. If it smashes into the skull hard enough it can go into overdrive.
